چکیده

Introduction The objective of this bulletin is to describe a stream habitat inventory procedure that will classify and quantify fish habitat in terms of channel features. The procedure is based on information gathered in gravel and boulder-bed streams in the western Cascade Mountains of Oregon and Washington and in the Kla-math Mountains of California (Bisson et al., 1981; Sullivan, 1986, Grant et al., in review; Decker et al., in progress). A stream habitat inventory as outlined here can give information on the sequence, distribution , and availability of pool, riffle and run habitat units, and yields a graphic picture of the stream channel (Figure 1). Areas which may be limited in terms of specific habitat (spawning, rearing, etc.) can be identified. CALIFORNIA The Fish Habitat Relationships (FHR) Program of R-5 USFS has been established to research and develop information on fish ecology and to coordinate effective applications of this knowledge in managing and protecting our fisheries. By relating life stage requirements of specific species to physical habitat parameters, we are aiming at our main objective: developing a methodology to manage fisheries through the management of habitat.

Native fish and minimum flows in the Kakanui River

The purpose of this study was to determine the distribution of native fish in the Kakanui River, their importance, and to assess low flows for maintenance of native fish habitat. The mainstem of the river was electrofished at 13 locations from near the estuary to the headwaters 54 km upstream. Eleven native fish species were found. Eight of these were reasonably abundant and their requirements ...

Fish assemblages and habitat ecology of River Pinder in central Himalaya, India

Snow-fed river Pinder -a tributary of river Alaknanda in central Himalaya was explored for fish assemblages and habitat specificity. Altogether 27 fish species were reported from three orders, four families and nine genera. Cypriniformes order was dominating followed by Siluriformes and Salmoniformes. Shannon-Weiner diversity index (3.09 to 4.10) and Simpson index of diversity (0.81 to 0.92) of...

Polychlorinated biphenyls and chlordane in the gonads of paddlefish, Polyodon spathula, from the Ohio River.

The paddlefish (Polyodon spathula) is a primitive fish that is found in several large rivers of the Mississippi River drainage. The status of paddlefish populations in these large rivers is debatable due to several factors including habitat loss, contaminants and commercial fishing (Sparrowe 1986; Gundersen and Pearson 1992). The roe of female paddlefish is used to make domestic caviar and comm...

Comparison between Model-Predicted and Field-Measured Stream Habitat Features for Evaluating Fish Assemblage–Habitat Relationships

—The use of model-predicted, local-scale habitat data as inputs in analyses intended to evaluate multiscale fish assemblage–habitat relationships in streams has become increasingly common as the scale at which such studies are conducted has increased. We used fish assemblage and habitat data from 208 wadeable streams in Wisconsin and Michigan to determine whether model-predicted habitat data wo...

Seafarers or castaways: ecological traits associated with rafting dispersal in tropical reef fishes

Methods We assessed the relationships between species-level traits (habitat use, position in water column, diet, body size, schooling activity) and rafting behaviour among 985 species of reef fish using generalized linear mixed-effect modelling. To assess whether the relationships between rafting behaviour and species traits were mediated by raft type, our analysis included interactions between...
